Could you tell me a bit about how the last six months have felt, money-wise?
Honestly? It’s been the kind of tight where you start counting things you didn’t use to count. Bread. The good kind, I mean. I’m back to the home-brand because the difference is two-fifty a week now. That sounds… small, doesn’t it. But two-fifty here, four-eighty there, and suddenly the week doesn’t close.
And in terms of who you talk to about that, family, friends, advisors?
Mostly nobody. You don’t want to be the one at coffee who says ‘I can’t’. My sister knows, but only in the abstract way. If I called the bank I’d sit on hold for forty minutes and end up speaking to someone reading from a script. That’s not a person to confide in.
How do you make decisions about where to cut, when something has to give?
By the end of the day my brain is fried. I make the worst decisions at 9pm because that’s when the bills come into focus, and that’s also when I’m the most tired. I don’t feel like I’m choosing, I feel like I’m reacting. Then in the morning I think, why did I do it that way?
Has there been anything that’s helped, even a little?
The library. There’s a woman there, Sandra, who just knows me now. She’ll see me come in and put aside the magazines I like. That’s small. But it’s the only thing I get for free that doesn’t feel like a handout.

Hidden austerity, cuts that aren’t announced.
Participants describe small, private downgrades, the cheaper bread, the unrenewed magazine, the cancelled birthday plan, framed not as deprivation but as recalibration. The cuts are made invisibly, often before the financial pressure is acknowledged out loud.
